Overview of History
Rock climbing is a very modern sport, but its rich heritage extends back into the times of the cave men and ancient civilizations. It was first born from a need for survival by ancient peoples, who, to evade predators and enemies, would quickly scale cliffs. However, despite its primitive beginnings, rock climbing began to develop as a sport in the Victorian era in Europe. It continued to progress, as a sport, through the 19th and 20th centuries; and, today, it is becoming more popular every year, as new equipment develops and word spreads. Overall, rock climbing is a new sport with roots that extend into the depths of time, when man first met rock.
